  • dcerpc2
  • decode
  • decoder_preproc_rules
  • dnp3
  • dns
  • filters
  • flowbits
  • frag3

  • reload
  • reputation
  • rzb_saac
  • sensitive_data
  • sfportscan
  • sip
  • SMTP
  • ssh

Acompanhe a nova serie "Snortando".

- VRT most enable rules focus on attempted-user
- ET most enable rules focus on web-application-attack and trojan-activity
- Rules from ET and VRT target different protections what you should analyze where you will seat your sensor for best decision or using both and mixing them

I just did some basic scripting and my numbers could not be accurate but it's a good base .

Snort Rules - Using content:"GET "; or not ?

I'm doing some tests with different rules since I'm creating a rules test labs and based on some old read/thread and one simple test here I started to look why do we use content:"GET "; in a lot of rules since it'll not be the first match mostly.

My first test that I started to notice what I read before was about using http_method or not with engine 2.8.6 .

My pcap I created a very simple GET / (packet  5)

$ tshark -r get-NoHost.pcap
 1   0.000000 192.168.21.1 -> 192.168.21.131 TCP 61599 > http [SYN]
Seq=0 Win=65535 Len=0 MSS=1460 WS=3 TSV=534894464 TSER=0

2   0.001384 192.168.21.1 -> 192.168.21.131 TCP 61599 > http [ACK]
Seq=1 Ack=1 Win=524280 Len=0 TSV=534894464 TSER=134793051

 3   3.798825 192.168.21.1 -> 192.168.21.131 TCP [TCP Dup ACK 2#1]
61599 > http [ACK] Seq=1 Ack=1 Win=524280 Len=0 TSV=534894502
TSER=134794001

 4   7.348575 192.168.21.1 -> 192.168.21.131 TCP [TCP segment of a
reassembled PDU]

 5   7.892566 192.168.21.1 -> 192.168.21.131 HTTP GET / HTTP/1.0

 6   8.197800 192.168.21.1 -> 192.168.21.131 TCP 61599 > http [ACK]
Seq=19 Ack=325 Win=524280 Len=0 TSV=534894546 TSER=134795100

 7   8.202863 192.168.21.1 -> 192.168.21.131 TCP 61599 > http [ACK]
Seq=19 Ack=326 Win=524280 Len=0 TSV=534894546 TSER=134795102

 8   8.202895 192.168.21.1 -> 192.168.21.131 TCP 61599 > http [FIN,
ACK] Seq=19 Ack=326 Win=524280 Len=0 TSV=534894546 TSER=134795102

I used those rules for testing the basics in my lab:

alert tcp $HOME_NET any -> $EXTERNAL_NET $HTTP_PORTS (msg:"New Rule One - GET";content:"GET";http_
method;content:"attack";sid:123456;)

alert tcp $HOME_NET any -> $EXTERNAL_NET $HTTP_PORTS (msg:"New Rule Two - POST";content:"POST";http_method;content:"index";sid:654321;)

alert tcp $HOME_NET any -> $EXTERNAL_NET $HTTP_PORTS (msg:"New Rule Three GET without
http_method";content:"GET";
content:"ABCDE";sid:23465324;)

alert tcp $HOME_NET any -> $EXTERNAL_NET $HTTP_PORTS (msg:"New Rule Four GET without http_method but using fast_pattern";content:"GET";fast_pattern;content:"ABCDE";sid:9845324;)

alert tcp $HOME_NET any -> $EXTERNAL_NET $HTTP_PORTS (msg:"New Rule Five GET without http_method and only content";content:"GET";sid:
4365324;)

And as result I got

$ perl rule-test-check.pl get-NoHost.pcap rules-samples/rules-new.rules snort.conf

SpiderLabs Rules Test version 0.1 Alpha

Result: Checked 123456 alert tcp $HOME_NET any -> $EXTERNAL_NET $HTTP_PORTS (msg:"New Rule One - GET";content:"GET";http_
method;content:"attack";sid:123456;)

Result: NoCheck 654321 alert tcp $HOME_NET any -> $EXTERNAL_NET $HTTP_PORTS (msg:"New Rule Two - POST";content:"POST";http_
method;content:"index";sid:654321;)

Result: NoCheck 23465324 alert tcp $HOME_NET any -> $EXTERNAL_NET $HTTP_PORTS (msg:"New Rule Three GET without http_method";content:"GET";
content:"ABCDE";sid:23465324;)

Result: Checked 9845324 alert tcp $HOME_NET any -> $EXTERNAL_NET $HTTP_PORTS (msg:"New Rule Four GET without http_method but using fast_pattern";content:"GET";
fast_pattern;content:"ABCDE";sid:9845324;)

Result: Checked 4365324 alert tcp $HOME_NET any -> $EXTERNAL_NET $HTTP_PORTS (msg:"New Rule Five GET without http_method and only content";content:"GET";sid:
4365324;)

Count Summary

Checked: 3
NotChecked: 2

Where:

Checked means that there is some output for this sid for one basic check at least (I'm using as base content GET since we have the packet number 5 with it) .

Based on that I remembered a good thread where Will Metacalf and Steve discuss some new features and http_modifiers use http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/message.php?msg_name=c13e433a1003092015v2d86f9a7x2eb73a2528df09f3%40mail.gmail.com .

So I tested based on some very basic grep at emerging-all.rules  "grep content:"GET " emerging-all.rules " . Using the rules that were output I ran my test against those rules (around 1047 rules) and the summary results:

Checked: 4
NotChecked: 1043

I started to figured out that content:"GET "; when we use that is tobe the first match BUT if you don't specify fast_pattern by default it'll be the bigger content to match ( http://vrt-sourcefire.blogspot.com/2009/07/rule-performance-part-one-content.html ) . So with another basic sed I changed the rules a little bit " sed -e 's/content:"GET ";/content:"GET ";fast_pattern;/g' " where it change for example:

Original

alert tcp $HOME_NET any -> $EXTERNAL_NET $HTTP_PORTS (msg:"ET CURRENT_EVENTS Zeus Bot / Zbot Checkin (/us01d/in.php)"; flow:established,to_server; content:"GET "; nocase; depth:4; uricontent:"/us01d/in.php"; reference:url,garwarner.blogspot.com/2010/01/american-bankers-association-version-of.html; reference:url,doc.emergingthreats.net/2010729; reference:url,www.emergingthreats.net/cgi-bin/cvsweb.cgi/sigs/CURRENT_EVENTS/CURRENT_Zeus; classtype:trojan-activity; sid:2010729; rev:3;)
fast_pattern debug choosing the biggest content found
 Fast pattern matcher: URI content
 Fast pattern set: no
 Fast pattern only: no
 Negated: no
 Pattern offset,length: none
 Pattern truncated: no
 Original pattern
   "/us01d/in.php"
 Final pattern
   "/us01d/in.php"

After sed

alert tcp $HOME_NET any -> $EXTERNAL_NET $HTTP_PORTS (msg:"ET CURRENT_EVENTS Zeus Bot / Zbot Checkin (/us01d/in.php)"; flow:established,to_server; content:"GET ";fast_pattern; nocase; depth:4; uricontent:"/us01d/in.php"; reference:url,garwarner.blogspot.com/2010/01/american-bankers-association-version-of.html; reference:url,doc.emergingthreats.net/2010729; reference:url,www.emergingthreats.net/cgi-bin/cvsweb.cgi/sigs/CURRENT_EVENTS/CURRENT_Zeus; classtype:trojan-activity; sid:2010729; rev:3;)

Rules fast_pattern debug using this option

 Fast pattern matcher: Content
 Fast pattern set: yes
 Fast pattern only: no
 Negated: no
 Pattern offset,length: none
 Pattern truncated: no
 Original pattern
   "GET|20|"
 Final pattern
   "GET|20|"

I rerun the same test and I got:

Checked: 976
NotChecked: 71

* Where NotChecked are mostly some GET content in a different way since I'm doing pretty basic grep/sed and not being so accurate =) .

The last test I changed fast_pattern to http_method but http_method only receive the normalize buffer but the default fast_pattern is the same , that's mean bigger content  so no change from the first result.

So my question is:  do we really need to analyze GET or POST (probably the same behavior since it's a short name) ? Did somebody try/test something like this before ? am I getting nuts talking about this? =D

In my opinion we could remove content:"GET ";  from the rules since it'll only use some checks and "decrease" the performance . I think we already have lot of point that make sure that it's a http traffic since using $HTTP_PORTS , flow , uricontent that comes from http_inspect and so on.
Some friends that I discussed about this told some point as : "maybe the attack can only be done using GET so it's good to specify since using POST will generate a false positive". My argument is the opposite since most rules we are not sure if that works with GET and/or POST only if we don't use them as part of the rule we will mitigate False Negatives and maybe save lot of CPU's cycle (but we need test to make sure about that) . I really prefer couple of FP than FN's .
What do you think ?

RazorBack - New Sourcefire VRT Project

VRT guys just released at Defcon 18 version 0.1 for RazorBack . The project is REALLY interesting and it's targeting client-side attack mostly since that's currently where most attacks are .

What is RazorBack ?

Project Razorback™ is an undertaking by the Sourcefire VRT.
Razorback is a framework for an intelligence driven security solution. It consists of a Dispatcher at the core of the system, surrounded by Nuggets of varying types.

The project page could be found here : http://labs.snort.org/razorback/

There you will find the slides, papers,  0.1 files version. Besides that they created a new channel at irc.freenode.net #razorback .

I'll try to do lot of test in next week and post about those here .

For sure this project will grow a lot quickly and kickass in the future . Get involved . I'll for sure .

Happy Snorting!

Snort 2.9.0 Beta Available

Awesome new features coming with snort 2.9.0 . I'll do lot of tests after Blackhat/Defcon .

A beta version of Snort 2.9.0 is now available on snort.org, at
http://www.snort.org/snort-downloads/

Snort 2.9.0 introduces:

  * Feature rich IPS mode including improvements to Stream for
    inline deployments.  Additionally a common active response API is
    used for all packet responses, including those from Stream,
    Respond, or React.  A new response module, respond3, supports the
    syntax of both resp & resp2, including strafing for passive
    deployments.  When Snort is deployed inline, a new preprocessor
    has been added to handle packet normalization to allow Snort
    to interpret a packet the same way as the receiving host.

  * Use of a Data Acquisition API (DAQ) that supports many different
    packet access methods including libpcap, netfilterq, IPFW, and
    afpacket.  For libpcap, version 1.0 or higher is now required.
    The DAQ library can be updated independently from Snort and is
    a separate module that Snort links.  See README.daq for details
    on using Snort and the new DAQ.

  * Updates to HTTP Inspect to extract and log IP addresses from
    X-Forward-For and True-Client-IP header fields when Snort generates
    events on HTTP traffic.

  * A new rule option 'byte_extract' that allows extracted values to
    be used in subsequent rule options for isdataat, byte_test,
    byte_jump, and content distance/within/depth/offset.

  * Updates to SMTP preprocessor to support MIME attachment decoding
    across multiple packets.

  * Ability to "test" drop rules using Inline Test Mode.  Snort will
    indicate a packet would have been dropped in the unified2 or
    console event log if policy mode was set to inline.

  * Two new rule options to support base64 decoding of certain pieces
    of data and inspection of the base64 data via subsequent rule
    options.

  * Updates to the Snort packet decoders for IPv6 for improvements to
    anomaly detection.

  * Added a new pattern matcher that supports Intel's Quick Assist

SRW - Snort Rules Week (VRT e ET) - edição 6 (01 Mar 2010/07 Mar 2010)

16453 <-> SPECIFIC-THREATS SMB Negotiate Protocol response DoS attempt - empty SMB 1 (specific-threats.rules, Medium)
16454 <-> SPECIFIC-THREATS SMB Negotiate Protocol response DoS attempt - empty SMB 2 (specific-threats.rules, Medium)
16455 <-> SPYWARE-PUT Keylogger egyspy keylogger 1.13 runtime detection (spyware-put.rules, Medium)
16456 <-> SPYWARE-PUT Rogue-Software ang antivirus 09 runtime detection (spyware-put.rules, High)
16457 <-> BACKDOOR Trojan.Downloader.Win32.Cutwail.AI runtime detection (backdoor.rules, High)
16458 <-> WEB-CLIENT Autonomy KeyView SDK Excel file SST parsing integer overflow attempt (web-client.rules, High)
16459 <-> SPECIFIC-THREATS Trojan command and control communication attempt (specific-threats.rules, High)
16460 <-> WEB-MISC text/html content-type without HTML - possible malware C&C (web-misc.rules, Medium

2010862 - ET WEB_SPECIFIC_APPS Possible APC Network Management Card Cross Site Scripting Attempt (emerging-web_specific_apps.rules)
2010863 - ET WEB_SERVER LANDesk Command Injection Attempt (emerging-web_server.rules)
2010864 - ET WEB_SERVER HP OpenView /OvCgi/Toolbar.exe Accept Language Heap Buffer Overflow Attempt (emerging-web_server.rules)
2010865 - ET WEB_SPECIFIC_APPS IBM Possible Lotus Domino readme.nsf Cross Site Scripting Attempt (emerging-web_specific_apps.rules)
2010866 - ET CURRENT_EVENTS Hostile domain, NeoSploit FakeAV google.analytics.com.*.info (emerging-current_events.rules)
2010867 - ET CURRENT_EVENTS Potential FakeAV download Setup_103s1 or Setup_207 variant (emerging-current_events.rules)
2010868 - ET USER_AGENTS Incorrectly formatted User-Agent string (dashes instead of semicolons) Likely Hostile (emerging-user_agents.rules)
2010869 - ET POLICY PE EXE or DLL Windows file download (2) (emerging-policy.rules)
2010870 - ET CURRENT_EVENTS NeoSploit Exploit Kit Java exploit drive-by host likely infected (kav) (emerging-current_events.rules)
2010871 - ET CURRENT_EVENTS NeoSploit Exploit Kit Java exploit drive-by host likely infected (nte) (emerging-current_events.rules)
2010872 - ET TROJAN Pragma\: hack Detected Outbound - Likely Infected Source (emerging-virus.rules)
2010873 - ET WEB_CLIENT Opera User-Agent Flowbit Set (emerging-web_client.rules)
2010874 - ET WEB_CLIENT Possible Opera Web Browser Content-Length Buffer Overflow Attempt (emerging-web_client.rules)
2010875 - ET TROJAN Blackenergy Bot Checkin to C&C (2) (emerging-virus.rules)

2400009 - ET DROP Spamhaus DROP Listed Traffic Inbound (emerging-drop.rules)
2404052 - ET DROP Known Bot C&C Server Traffic TCP (group 27) (emerging-botcc.rules)
2404053 - ET DROP Known Bot C&C Server Traffic UDP (group 27) (emerging-botcc.rules)
2406660 - ET RBN Known Russian Business Network IP TCP (331) (emerging-rbn.rules)
2406661 - ET RBN Known Russian Business Network IP UDP (331) (emerging-rbn.rules)

Um regra legal é a que comentamos no último post "ET MALWARE Possible Windows executable sent when remote host claims to send a Text File" http://spookerlabs.blogspot.com/2010/03/possivel-executavel-windows-enviado.html .

Outra regra que monitora User-Agent anomalos seria a ET USER_AGENTS Incorrectly formatted User-Agent string (dashes instead of semicolons) Likely Hostile .

Mesmo offline o instinto nerds sempre me leva a olhar coisas do dia a dia .

alert tcp any !20 -> $HOME_NET !25 (msg:"ET MALWARE Possible Windows executable sent when remote host claims to send a Text File"; flow: established,from_server; content:"Content-Type|3a| text/plain"; content:"|0d 0a|MZ"; within: 12; classtype: trojan-activity; reference:url,doc.emergingthreats.net/bin/view/Main/2008438; reference:url,www.emergingthreats.net/cgi-bin/cvsweb.cgi/sigs/MALWARE/MALWARE_Covert_Executable_DL; sid:2008438; rev:3;)

# cat notepad.exe | head -1
MZ@ ``Wine placeholder DLLPE

# cat sidebr.exe | head -1
MZP @ ! L!This program must be run under Win32

O primeiro exe (notepad.exe) é um binário simples, o segundo é um malware (sidebr.exe).

# clamscan notepad.exe
notepad.exe: OK

----------- SCAN SUMMARY -----------
Known viruses: 726013
Engine version: 0.95.3
Scanned directories: 0
Scanned files: 1
Infected files: 0
Data scanned: 0.09 MB
Data read: 0.08 MB (ratio 1.14:1)
Time: 1.264 sec (0 m 1 s)
notsecure:/#

# clamscan sidebr.exe
sidebr.exe: Trojan.Spy.Banker-5050 FOUND

----------- SCAN SUMMARY -----------
Known viruses: 726013
Engine version: 0.95.3
Scanned directories: 0
Scanned files: 1
Infected files: 1
Data scanned: 0.88 MB
Data read: 4.62 MB (ratio 0.19:1)
Time: 1.435 sec (0 m 1 s)
notsecure:/#

Happy Hacking!

SRW - Snort Rules Week (VRT e ET) - edição 5 (22 Fev 2010/28 Fev 2010)

16438 <-> ORACLE WebLogic Server Node Manager arbitrary command execution attempt (oracle.rules, High)
16439 <-> SPECIFIC-THREATS Possible Zeus User-Agent - _TEST_ (specific-threats.rules, High)
16440 <-> SPECIFIC-THREATS Possible Zeus User-Agent - ie (specific-threats.rules, High)
16441 <-> SPECIFIC-THREATS Possible Zeus User-Agent - Download (specific-threats.rules, High)
16442 <-> SPECIFIC-THREATS Possible Zeus User-Agent - Mozilla (specific-threats.rules, High)
16443 <-> CHAT deny Gmail chat DNS request (chat.rules, High)
16444 <-> SPECIFIC-THREAT HP StorageWorks storage mirroring double take service code execution attempt (specific-threats.rules, High)
16445 <-> SPECIFIC-THREATS Digium Asterisk IAX2 ack response denial of service attempt (specific-threats.rules, Medium)
16446 <-> RPC portmap Solaris sadmin tcp request (rpc.rules, Medium)
16447 <-> RPC portmap Solaris sadmin udp request (rpc.rules, Medium)
16448 <-> RPC portmap Solaris sadmin tcp adm_build_path overflow attempt (rpc.rules, Medium)
16449 <-> RPC portmap Solaris sadmin udp adm_build_path overflow attempt (rpc.rules, Medium)
16450 <-> SQL Jive Software Openfire Jabber Server SQL injection attempt (sql.rules, High)
16451 <-> WEB-CLIENT Palm WebOS 1.2.0 floating point exception denial of service attempt (web-client.rules, Medium)

Anúncio completo 23/02 http://www.snort.org/vrt/docs/ruleset_changelogs/CURRENT/changes-2010-02-23.html

16452 <-> WEB-CLIENT IE .hlp samba share download attempt (web-client.rules, High)

16439 <-> SPECIFIC-THREATS Possible Zeus User-Agent - _TEST_ (specific-threats.rules, High)
16440 <-> SPECIFIC-THREATS Possible Zeus User-Agent - ie (specific-threats.rules, High)
16441 <-> SPECIFIC-THREATS Possible Zeus User-Agent - Download (specific-threats.rules, High)
16442 <-> SPECIFIC-THREATS Possible Zeus User-Agent - Mozilla (specific-threats.rules, High)

2010860 - ET TROJAN Buzus Proxy Server Response (emerging-virus.rules)
2010861 - ET TROJAN Zeus Bot Request to CnC (emerging-virus.rules)

Happy Snorting!

Zeus Botnet / Snort e falsos negativos

alert tcp $HOME_NET any -> $EXTERNAL_NET $HTTP_PORTS (msg:"ET TROJAN - Possible Zeus/Perkesh (.bin) configuration download"; flow:established,to_server; content:"GET "; depth:4; content:"|0d 0a|Accept|3a| */*|0d 0a|"; uricontent:".bin"; pcre:"/\/[0-9A-Z]+\.bin$/Ui"; classtype:trojan-activity; reference:url,zeustracker.abuse.ch; reference:url,doc.emergingthreats.net/2010348; reference:url,www.emergingthreats.net/cgi-bin/cvsweb.cgi/sigs/VIRUS/TROJAN_Zeus,reference:url,anubis.iseclab.org/?action=result&task_id=10eabca7c3621d904e916a9fff3738c6f&format=html; sid:2010348; rev:5;)

Com isso teriamos o alerta:

# snort -c snort-ET.conf -K none -A console -q -r /LABS/PCAPS/zeus.pcap

02/25-08:28:02.537402 [**] [1:2010348:5] ET TROJAN - Possible Zeus/Perkesh (.bin) configuration download [**] [Classification: A Network Trojan was detected] [Priority: 1] {TCP} 192.168.0.2:1038 -> 91.201.28.35:80

Happy Snorting!

SRW - Snort Rules Week (VRT e ET) - edição 4 (15 Fev 2010/21 Fev 2010)

16424 <-> WEB-ACTIVEX Windows Script Host Shell Object ActiveX clsid access (web-activex.rules, High)
16425 <-> WEB-CLIENT Portable Executable binary file transfer (web-client.rules, Low)
16426 <-> WEB-MISC Sun Java System Web Server 7.0 WebDAV format string exploit attempt - PROPFIND method (web-misc.rules, High)
16427 <-> WEB-MISC Sun Java System Web Server 7.0 WebDAV format string exploit attempt - LOCK method (web-misc.rules, High)
16428 <-> EXPLOIT Microsoft Outlook Express and Windows Mail NNTP handling buffer overflow attempt (exploit.rules, High)
16429 <-> WEB-MISC Novell iManager eDirectory plugin schema buffer overflow attempt - GET request (web-misc.rules, High)
16430 <-> WEB-MISC Novell iManager eDirectory plugin schema buffer overflow attempt - POST request (web-misc.rules, High)
16431 <-> SQL generic sql with comments injection attempt - GET parameter (sql.rules, High)
16432 <-> WEB-ACTIVEX Trend Micro Web Deployment ActiveX clsid access (web-activex.rules, High)
16433 <-> EXPLOIT Microsoft Active Directory LDAP query handling denial of service (exploit.rules, Medium)
16434 <-> POLICY Ultimate Packer for Executables/UPX v0.51-v0.61 packed file download attempt (policy.rules, Low)
16435 <-> POLICY Ultimate Packer for Executables/UPX v0.62-v1.22 packed file download attempt (policy.rules, Low)
16436 <-> POLICY Ultimate Packer for Executables/UPX v2.90,v2.93-3.00 packed file download attempt (policy.rules, Low)
16437 <-> EXPLOIT CVS Entry line flag remote heap overflow attempt (exploit.rules, High)

Um regra mais generica e legal caso você proteja servidores web é a regra SQL generic sql with comments injection attempt - GET parameter

ET DROP Known Bot C&C Server Traffic

2009024 - ET CURRENT_EVENTS Downadup/Conficker A or B Worm reporting (emerging-virus.rules)

Happy Snorting!

SRW - Snort Rules Week (VRT e ET) - edição 3 (08 Fev 2010/14 Fev 2010)

16395 <-> NETBIOS SMB COPY command oversized pathname attempt
16405 <-> ICMP Microsoft Windows Ipv6pHandleRouterAdvertisement Prefix Information stack buffer overflow attempt
16409 <-> WEB-CLIENT Microsoft PowerPoint improper filename remote code execution attempt

16401 <-> NETBIOS NETBIOS-DG SMB andx invalid server name share access
16402 <-> NETBIOS NETBIOS-DG SMB invalid server name share access
16403 <-> NETBIOS NETBIOS-DG SMB unicode andx invalid server name share access
16404 <-> NETBIOS NETBIOS-DG SMB unicode invalid server name share access
16406 <-> WEB-MISC JPEG file download attempt
16407 <-> WEB-MISC JPEG file download attempt

Link completo do update http://www.snort.org/vrt/docs/ruleset_changelogs/CURRENT/changes-2010-02-09.html

Nessa semana do SRW edição 3 tivemos as seguintes regras:

2010771 - ET WEB_SPECIFIC_APPS asaher pro view_messages.php row_y5_site_configuration Remote File Inclusion Attempt (emerging-web_specific_apps.rules)
2010772 - ET WEB_SPECIFIC_APPS asaher pro view_blog_comments.php Remote File Inclusion Attempt (emerging-web_specific_apps.rules)

2010780 - ET WEB_SPECIFIC_APPS Joomla mediaslide component viewer.php path Local File Inclusion Attempt (emerging-web_specific_apps.

2010792 - ET TROJAN Bredavi Proxy Registration (emerging-virus.rules)
2010793 - ET TROJAN Bredavi Binary Download Request (emerging-virus.rules)
